Board of Trustees hold April 28 meeting at new West City campus

The San Diego Community College District (SDCCD) Board of Trustees held a meeting on April 28 at the Continuing Education West City Campus in Point Loma.

Construction on the campus had recently been completed and trustees Maria Nieto Senour, Ph.D.Bill Schwandt, Peter Zschiesche and Rich Grosch were impressed by the new facility. Grosch also complimented the campus faculty and administration for “continued efforts to further integrate instructional and occupational programs with the District’s colleges.”

Continuing Education (CE) is comprised of six campuses that offer mainly free courses in vocational programs including accounting, culinary arts, automotives, certified nursing  assistant and medical office assistant. Personal enrichment classes, such as ballroom dancing and instrumental classes, are offered at a nominal fee.

During the report of trustees, Student Trustee Sebastian Law noted that student leaders will be travelling to the Sacramento this weekend with the intent to help develop resolutions in support of California community colleges.

With regard to the state budget, Chancellor Constance Carroll, Ph.D. noted that the Special Election on May 19 will be considering six important initiatives, five of which addresses the state budget. Chancellor Carroll stressed the significance of this Special Election as the outcome will affect public entities such as the community college system.

Trustees Zschiesche and Grosch spoke in support of all six initiatives.

To address the swine flu outbreak in the county, SDCCD will be assigning top priority to the situation, adding that a special advisory was sent to all district employees, with a similar advisory sent to all district students.

The advisory provided information on precautions to help prevent the spread of the flu and offered a link for those seeking additional information.

Trustee Senour noted that she attended a showing of ”SWING!” at the Saville Theatre, taking a moment to compliment City College on the musical production, and adding her appreciation with regard to the creative efforts of the district’s institutions.

City Times’ recent article about the musical production, “SWING! jumps, jives and wails on Saville stage,” notes that ”the Visual and Performing Arts department has put in a great deal of effort to bring to stage an epic musical era that revolutionized the nation from 1930 through 1946.”

Board actions taken include the accepting and appropriating of additional state grant monies for district-wide scheduled maintenance, as well as for financial aid to all three colleges (City, Mesa, Miramar), and for Mesa College EOPS programs and City College TRIO/Student Support Services.

There was also an authorization of general fund budget revisions that included an increase for faculty/staff diversity and decreases for ongoing instructional support block grants, Basic Skills program and CalWORKs.
